About the Board

"For the Protection of the Health, Safety and Welfare of the Public."

The Board of Licensure in Medicine is the state agency responsible for protecting the health and safety of the public by determining who may be licensed for medical practice in this state and by regulating the medical practice of those licensees.

The members of the Board are appointed by the Governor. The Board is composed of both physician and non-physician representatives of the public. All members must have been Maine residents for at least five years at the time of their appointment and the physician members must have been licensed and actively practicing medicine in the state.

The Board employs its own administrative and investigative staff and is provided with the legal and investigative staff by the Maine Department of Attorney General.

Online renewals are now available for MDs

Our Online Renewal process has successfully completed all its testing stages and is now available. MDs with licenses due for renewal can now renew their license by going to:

www.maine.gov/online/doclicensing

MDs with licenses due for renewal will no longer be receiving paper applications for renewal of MD licensure. When an MD license is due for renewal, licensees will be receiving a postcard like this sample (Below) notifying them that their license is due to expire. If they choose to renew by paper - or if the online feature will not allow you to renew online - then they must return the postcard to the Board office to receive a paper application or they can print out a paper copy of our MD renewal form by downloading one from our website at: http://www.docboard.org/me/licensure/MD_Renewal_App.pdf

Physician prescribing information: “OPT OUT”

The 2007 Legislature established a state-sponsored “opt out” process for physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners to prevent access to practitioner specific prescribing data, through the Maine Health Data Organization. (P.L. 2007, Chapter 460) Prescribers seeking confidentiality protection with the Maine Health Data Organization to prohibit carriers, pharmacies, and prescription drug information intermediaries from licensing, using, selling, or exchanging for value prescription drug information for any marketing purpose that identifies those prescribers are required to complete an electronic form. [This notice allows the board to provide notice and access to the registration site, and allows registration, but does not allow DHHS to enforce the reporting requirements of the law due to an existing order enjoining enforcement of § 1711-E(2-A) issued by the Federal District Court for the District of Maine.]
